You Are Cordially Invited
to join the PIPS Alumni Network & the W&M DC Alumni Board at the beautiful DACOR Bacon House on Thursday, September 7th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm for a fireside conversation with three of the nation's most distinguished and dedicated foreign policy practitioners.
For far longer than their lives and identities have been fully recognized by their country, LGBT individuals have been serving the United States with dedication at every level - including in national security, defense, and foreign policy.
It is our great privilege to host three of these remarkable public servants - former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Walt Slocombe, former Assistant Secretary of State for Politico-Military Affairs Clarke Cooper, and President of the DACOR Foreign Affairs Society and Career Foreign Service Officer Angela Dickey - as they regale us with tales from their storied careers in national security and foreign service.
A cocktail hour on the patio (indoors if weather is inclement) will precede the evening's program. Light hors d'oeuvres and your first beverage is included with admission.
Walt Slocombe is a Rhodes Scholar, former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas, and Harvard Law trained lawyer who rapidly rose through the United States national security community culminating with a seven-year term of service as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy during the Clinton Administration. He is a four-time recipient of an award for Distinguished Public Service, serves on the Board of Directors at the Atlantic Council and currently practices law in Washington DC.
R. Clarke Cooper became involved in domestic politics shortly after graduating from Florida State University, including Native American tribal affairs and environmental preservation and restoration matters. While serving in the US Reserves, he was deployed to Iraq and returned to active duty later in 2013, first with Special Operations Command Africa, and later with Joint Special Operations Command. Cooper has held several diplomatic postings in Baghdad and the United Nations and in 2018 was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. Currently, Cooper is the founder and President of the consultancy, Guard Hill House, LLC, serves as a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, and is a member of the LGBT Advisory Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Angela Dickey taught at Georgia Southern University and was a journalist with the Orlando Sentinel before embarking on a 25 year career in the foreign service. Among her many postings, including in Mauritania, Iraq, the Philippines, and Yemen, she was Deputy Consul General in Vietnam and Deputy Chief of Mission in Laos. Since her retirement from the State Department, she has worked with the US Institute for Peace, lecturing and training international peacekeepers, and written about the challenges and opportunities that the Foreign Service continues to face.
We look forward to welcoming you to DACOR Bacon House to meet this distinguished panel of public servants.
